RANGERS REPORTEDLY WANT TO BRING 28-YEAR-OLD TO IBROX NEXT SUMMER

Rangers are keen on Ayo Obileye and he has previously shared his admiration for ex-Gers midfielder Joe Aribo. Gers director of football Ross Wilson is coming in for strong criticism after a mixed summer transfer window. Many of Wilson’s summer additions have yet to really shine at Ibrox and fans are starting to turn on Wilson. Defensive additions may be on the radar for January and one current Scottish Premiership ace is being linked. Obileye, 28, was previously in the ranks of clubs like Chelsea, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic.

After dipping into non-league football with Eastleigh, Dover Athletic, Maidenhead United and Ebbsfleet United, Obileye headed to Queen of the South in 2020. Livingston pounced to sign Obileye in 2021 and the Englishman has been so good that Nigeria are now looking into calling Obileye may be a late bloomer and whilst it’s unlikely that he could become a key player at Celtic or Rangers, his performances are attracting interest.

The 6ft 4in centre back may well be on Rangers’ radar and he would surely love the move – especially as he could follow in the footsteps of Joe Aribo. Aribo and Obileye were in the Charlton ranks together and could soon be Nigeria international teammates of Obileye lands his call-up. In August of last year, Obileye told the Glasgow Evening Times that Aribo was an inspiration to him because he had moved from England to Scotland and succeeded.
Obileye suggested that Aribo was playing at a level he was aspiring to get to, and that could become a reality if Rangers firm up their interest. Obileye would be heading Rangers at a later stage in his career than Aribo did, but this just goes to show how players develop at different rates. For Obileye to hold Aribo up as an inspiration and then just over a year later find himself on Rangers’ radar is pretty impressive progress.
Aribo and Obileye appear to be close friends and the now-Southampton ace will surely give the defender rave reviews about life at Ibrox.
