RANGERS STILL STRUGGLING

Rangers’ inconsistent form continued even after the appointment of Kenny McDowell as the new manager. The team suffered a heavy 4-0 loss at the hands of Rangers going into the New Year. This defeat sees the club a massive 15 points adrift of the table leaders, Heart of Midlothian.

Rangers recently parted company with Ally McCoist, while the club has also been surrounded by new financial issues. Rangers have suffered three defeats in the last five matches. This may mean that they will have to go through a play-off in order to get promoted and this certainly does not give a lot of confidence for the supporters.

McDowell took charge of the team for the first time against Hibernian. He witnessed the team go down 2-0 after just 12 minutes on the clock. The much-needed comeback from the away team never came and Hibernian only extended their lead in the second half through Robertson and Craig.

This result also means that the home team have closed the gap to Rangers to only four points - something the guys did not see happening at the start of the season - Rangers were firm favourites for promotion.

McDowell said that the entire game plan of Rangers was thrown out of the window after 12 minutes. He did admit that the team were mentally tired after the recent run of fixtures during Christmas.

"It was very disappointing to be two down after 12 minutes. Our whole game plan went out the window [after Hibs' early goals]. I don't know if a lack of commitment is the word I would use. They just did not look organised at times. They were not where they should have been on the park.
Commitment? You should ask them. Were the boys mentally tired? I couldn't deny that was a part of it with the goings on and the situation. But do I want to make that an excuse? No,” said McDowell.
